Yes, the stewards should have caught it right away.  Baucom was smoking heavily on the pace lap.  But I would hold him most responsible.  Either he was aware that he was oiling the track and his ego is so big that he just didn't care, or he wasn't paying attention, which is damning in itself.  These were not minor wisps of smoke that could be missed.  Plus, he ignored the meatball flag.

Bottom line - one man's ego or ignorance damaged a lot of cars; luckily no significant injuries.  Baucom should get a substantial suspension of his driving privileges.
